CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE (CoE) IN UNANI MEDICINE (Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology), Bioactive Natural Product Laboratory (BNPL) carries forward the vision of founder Chancellor Janab Hakeem Abdul Hameed of infusing state of the art research in the field of traditional medicine esp. Unani Medicine by utilizing modern concepts of Drug Development from pharmaceutical sciences.

The CoE is a well-equipped state of the art facility, promoting research on Unani and other Traditional drugs and formulations as well as medicinal plants for their quality control, metabolomic profiling, pharmacokinetics, stability, toxicity and biological screenings required for drug development as par with the global standard. Spreading over the space of approximately 10000 Square feet, the CoE is equipped with the modern equipments like Inverted Microscope, Incubator, Spectrophotometer, Super Critical Fluid Extractor (SCFE), Multi-Mode Reader, Flash Chromatography, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) as well as cell culture facility.

The AYUSH system has an exceptional potential to become an important alternative resource for improving Global Public Health and the Unani system of Medicine is an incredible contributor towards the advance of AYUSH system. However, to achieve this goal, there a large unmet need to carry out exhaustive scientific research on Unani Medicine and to carry out training for competency development of AYUSH / Unani Professionals. The objective of the CoE is to carry forward this challenging task by conceptualizing and executive contemporary and scientific research and training the AYUSH professionals in the modern scientific techniques.

I hope with sincere efforts of Dr Sayeed Ahmad (Coordinator-CoE), the facility will rise to be the leading research and training centre in the field of Traditional / AYUSH / Unani medicine and contribute in generating quality Unani products and trained manpower which can be utilized by the Unani pharmaceutical industry, academia, R&D Institutions and related organizations for fulfilling the unmet healthcare needs. I am sure that the CoE at Jamia Hamdard will play significant role in overall up gradation of Unani system of medicine in the years to come.
