Aims and Objectives

• Establishing a world-class laboratory dedicated to advancing research on AYUSH (Unani) Medicine and Food supplements, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and accredited by AYUSH, QCI, FSSAI, and NABL for maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability.
• Creating an AYUSH-approved center that specializes in training and research on AYUSH and food products, focusing on quality control, preclinical evaluation, and certification. This center will serve as a hub for advancing knowledge and expertise in AYUSH practices and ensuring the safety and efficacy of food products through rigorous testing and evaluation.
• Establishing a centre of excellence dedicated to the quality analysis of AYUSH drugs and food products. This center will conduct comprehensive stability testing and assess various analytical parameters to ensure the development of high-quality products that meet the satisfaction of manufacturers and stakeholders. By implementing advanced analytical techniques, the center will contribute to the enhancement of AYUSH industry standards and product quality.

By pursuing these objectives, our laboratory aims to foster scientific advancement, promote quality assurance, and support the growth of the AYUSH industry by providing a reliable platform for research, training, and analysis of AYUSH medicines and food products.

About laboratory

Welcome to the Centre of Excellence in Unani Medicine (Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology) & Bioactive Natural Products Laboratory , a state-of-the-art research facility under the Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. Our laboratory, sponsored by DST FIST and UGC SAP-II, focuses on a wide range of scientific investigations related to metabolomics, quality control, monograph development, hyphenated chromatography, TLC bioautography, pharmacokinetics, and stability studies of herbal drugs and formulations.

We are proud to share that our dedication to excellence has been recognized by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, which has granted us Rs 10.0 crore to establish a Centre of Excellence in Unani Medicine (Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology). This initiative will enable us to conduct advanced research on Unani Medicine in collaboration with the School of Unani Medicine Education and Research (SUMER) at Jamia Hamdard. We also maintain fruitful research partnerships with renowned industries such as Hamdard, Dabur, Aimil, and educational institutions both within India and abroad, including NCNPR at the University of Mississippi, USA, and the University of Khartoum, Sudan, Russia and Philippines.

Our laboratory currently hosts over 25 research scholars, including postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. candidates, and master's students. With ongoing projects worth more than 13 crore, we have successfully acquired more than 25 modern sophisticated equipment through project grants. Additionally, we have a vast collection of over 500 costly reference standards and over 350 preserved raw materials, which are invaluable for our research endeavors.

Bioactive Natural Products Laboratory takes great pride in the extensive training it provides, having produced over 75 highly skilled professionals who are now employed in key positions worldwide. Our contributions to the scientific community extend beyond personnel, with over 400 publications in esteemed journals and numerous patents and technology transfers to different industries for product development.

As a testament to our commitment to knowledge dissemination, Bioactive Natural Products Laboratory has organized numerous workshops, national and international seminars, and conferences, including the successful SFEC 2020, which saw the participation of over 350 resource persons from more than 50 countries and IASTAM 2022 which witnessed the presence of more than 100 renowned speakers from India and many other countries including, USA, UK, Russia, UAE, KSA, Bangladesh, Nepal, Iran etc and above our 1000 delegates from India and abroad. Moreover, we have successfully completed over 40 sponsored and EMR projects funded by esteemed organizations such as DST, DBT, ICMR, UGC, AYUSH, NMPB, CCRAS, CCRUM, and DRDO. These achievements are under the capable leadership of Prof. Sayeed Ahmad, the Principal Investigator, Coordinator, and Director of Centre of Excellence in Unani Medicine (Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry) and Bioactive Natural Products Laboratory.
